Voluntary HECS repayment cut-off for June 2026 indexation

The ATO recommends voluntary payments clear by 26 May 2026 to count before 1 June indexation. Why the cut-off exists, what happens if you miss it, and the BPAY codes that get there fastest.

The ATO's recommended cut-off for voluntary HECS-HELP payments to count before 1 June 2026 indexation is 26 May 2026. Payments after that risk being applied to the balance after the 2.80% has already been charged.

Why 26 May, not 31 May

Voluntary payments to the ATO settle via BPAY or direct credit. Both have processing lags — typically 1–3 business days for BPAY, longer for some banks. The ATO gives 5 business days' buffer before indexation to ensure payments clear and post to your account.

If you pay on 30 May, the bank may show "sent" but the ATO may not credit the payment until 2 June, after the indexation event. Your dollar gets indexed first, then reduces the balance.

How to pay

  1. Log into myGov → ATO.
  2. Navigate to Tax → Accounts → Loans → Voluntary repayment. You'll see your personal BPAY biller code (75556) and your reference number — keep these private, they're tied to your TFN.
  3. From your banking app: BPAY → Add biller → Biller code 75556 → enter your personal reference. Schedule the payment for at least 5 business days before 1 June.
  4. Check your ATO account 2–3 days later to confirm the balance dropped.

If you miss the cut-off

Your payment still applies, just after indexation. Practically:

  • $10,000 paid on 26 May → balance gets indexed at 2.80% × (balance − $10,000). You save $280.
  • $10,000 paid on 3 June → balance gets indexed at 2.80% × full balance, then $10,000 reduces the indexed total. You save nothing this cycle.

If you missed it, the right move is to redirect that cash to a savings account for the next 12 months and re-decide before 26 May 2027.

Should you pay at all?

At 2.80% indexation and 5.00%+ savings rates, voluntary repayments lose to high-interest savings for most income brackets. The calculator runs the math for your specific situation in 30 seconds.
